Is God Really Going To Protect Me?
As a child, I fought separation anxiety. I did not want to be away from my parents because I knew that I was safe as long as I was with them. They made sure that I knew they love me and will always protect me. Now, being a grown woman, I have to wrestle with protecting myself and trusting the Lord with whatever He has planned for my life. Along with separation anxiety, one of my biggest fears was being abducted and being taken advantage of. From a young age, I was told that there were certain people who wanted to use me just because I was pretty or a woman. Sad to say, that fear hasn't gone away.
The sexualized culture that we live in has strayed so far from how God intended sex to be. Nowadays, it's driven by selfish desire instead of selfless, Christ-centered intimacy. Recognizing that there are people out there who fuel their lives by this desire is not a bad thing, we should educate ourselves about this, especially as women. We also need to recognize that these people are image-bearers of God. I am not trying to shame anyone who has been that person or anyone who has experienced someone like this, but shine light on a dark situation.
As women, we know that we have to be smart. We keep pepper spray in our cars or hold our keys between our knuckles at night as a means of protection, but we also have to recognize that there is a better field of protection over us.
One of the passages that the Sex In A Broken World Women's Ministry Community Group is focusing on is Romans 8:18-39. In this post, I want to highlight Romans 8:26-29, which states, "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
Some of the situations we have gone through, are in right now, or will go through in the future will be scary. They may shake us to our core, leave our minds spiraling, and spread the most fear we have ever felt all throughout our body. However, these situations are nothing compared to the mighty God that we get to call Father.
God can turn the darkest moment into the most hopeful story. Something good will come out of whatever bad situation you're in. God put you there for a reason, and He has His hand over it.
Stop living your life in fear of what may happen and start trusting the God who already sees the outcome of your life. I pray that you and I would start running after the perfect Father in the midst of this broken world. I pray that we would read the scriptures and soak in the truth of His word and not back down from its powerful authority. I pray that in those moments when we doubt God's ability to protect us, we would be reminded of how great, loving, and mighty He is.
Now, if you feel like God is tugging on your heart after reading this, just as He is tugging on mine as I write this, I want to invite you to pray this with me:
"Father, thank you for your unconditional love. Thank you for the endless protection you give. I know that you would never give me more than I can handle and I know that you are right there beside me through everything. I want to trust you more. I pray that you would be my strength as I relinquish my control and surrender to your will. No matter what happens to me, you are still good and you are still God and your good plan is still unfolding as I speak. Nothing can stop you or your will for my life. In your Holy name I pray, amen."
