The Obedience of Joseph

In reflection on the Christmas story, I found out that there's not much mentioned about Jesus's father, Joseph. However, I believe that there is much to be learned.

We see a small glimpse of Joseph's obedience in Matthew 1:23-25, "23 'Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel' (which means God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus."

The one thing that is crucial to understand is that even though Joseph was skeptical, he still had faith and trusted the Lord.

He was obedient because of his faith.

Joseph trusted that the Lord knew what He was doing. He had this all planned out since the very beginning of time.

And yet, how quick are we to be as skeptical as Joseph? Now being skeptical is not bad. God loves our questions. But, we must pair our questions with our faith.

In uncertainty, we will never be able to be obedient without our faith. Nor will we ever be able to be obedient without help from the Holy Spirit.

We must call upon the Lord to ask for help.

This Christmas, remember the obedience of Joseph. Remember your faith and remember that because of Jesus, we have ultimate access to God to receive that help to be obedient.

What a gift!
